What is silent, invisible and deadly?

Carbon Monoxide   kills

What are the danger signs ?  You won't always be able to see signs of carbon monoxide,   but if you spot any of these signs, turn off your appliance and call in an expert immediately:

  • Stains, or soot deposits

  • Yellow or orange flames

  • Smell of fumes

What is carbon monoxide ? For gas or solid fuel appliances to work safely, they need a supply of fresh air. Without it, they could give off CARBON MONOXIDE.

Carbon Monoxide is a poisonous gas, caused by burning. If you breathe it in, it stops the blood taking up vital oxygen needed to keep you alive.

  • It has no colour

  • It has no smell

  • It has no taste

  • It is silent, invisible and deadly.

When are you at risk ?  You are at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning if:

  • Your equipment is not working properly

  • There is not enough fresh air in the room

  • Your chimney or flue gets blocked

What are the symptoms ?

  • If you feel drowsy

  • Have a slight headache

  • Feel dizzy when you stand up

  • Have a pain in your chest

These are just some of the symptoms. You could also feel tired, have palpitations, or diarrhoea and stomach pains. If you experience any of the above symptoms, you could be suffering from the early stages of carbon monoxide poisoning.

If you have any of these symptoms, turn off your appliance and see your doctor at once.

Safety Advice

  • Have your appliances regularly serviced by an expert. Central heating boilers, gas fires and gas water heaters should be serviced once a year.

  • Have your appliances properly installed by an expert - don't try to do it yourself.

  • Never block air vents.

  • Never try to repair or alter an appliance yourself.

  • Act straight away if you spot the danger signs, or feel any of the symptoms.

  • Always read and follow the instructions, especially any warnings.

  • For added peace of mind, get a carbon monoxide detector.

  • Only use CORGI registered engineers.
